Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Definition, metrics, and tactics — plus the honest limits. GEO vs AEO vs SEO, and what changes when the output is a generated answer.

Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving whether and how an organization, product, or source appears in answers produced by generative search and assistant systems.

That can mean being retrieved, cited, represented accurately, or recommended. Those outcomes should not be collapsed into one score. GEO adds a generated-answer measurement layer to good search and communications work; it does not repeal either.

GEO vs AEO vs SEO

Term Scope Ranking unit Metric
SEOSearch enginesPagesPosition, impressions, CTR
AEOAnswer surfaces (snippets, Overviews, AI)PassagesAnswer capture rate
GEOGenerative search and assistantsSources, entities, generated claimsCitation, mention, recommendation, accuracy

Usage is not standardized, and teams often use GEO and AEO interchangeably. The useful distinction is operational: which surface, observable event, and business outcome are you measuring?

Metrics that matter

  • Recommendation rate. How often the business is actually offered as an option across eligible runs.
  • Citation rate. How often owned or earned sources are linked. A citation is not automatically a recommendation.
  • Share of voice. Your qualifying mentions as a share of qualifying category mentions under a fixed protocol.
  • Per-assistant coverage. Which of the four assistants actually name you? Averaging hides the variance that matters.
  • Confidence intervals. Citation rates on small samples are noisy. Wilson 95% CIs are the honest reporting standard.
  • Delta after a change. The proof metric. Re-run the same prompt set against the same assistants after a rewrite; if citation rate moved above the noise floor, the change worked.

Traffic, qualified inquiries, and revenue remain business outcomes. Answer visibility may matter even without a click, but it should not be declared a commercial win when downstream behavior is unobserved.

Tactics that work

  1. Buyer-situation content. Pages built around specific buyer situations, phrased the way a buyer would ask, not the way a category is labeled.
  2. Clear evidence architecture. Direct answers, useful headings, accessible HTML, and structured data that matches visible content.
  3. Verifiable proof. Numbers, named cases, credentials, disclosures — anything a language model can retrieve as evidence.
  4. Consistent entity data. Structured data (LocalBusiness, Organization, LegalService), consistent name / address / phone across the web, unambiguous entity references.
  5. Measurement infrastructure. If you cannot re-run the exact same prompt set against the same assistants and compare, you are guessing.

Honest limits

GEO is early, and the evidence is narrower than the sales decks:

  • Discovery, indexing, retrieval, generation, and product updates can each introduce change, often on undisclosed schedules.
  • Prompt phrasing can swing citation rates by 20–40 points for the same firm on the same day (Viclaro published a construct-validity study documenting this).
  • Providers publish some crawler and search behavior, but not a complete recommendation formula. Product documentation and measured behavior are different kinds of evidence.

Which means: any GEO tool that promises a single stable "AI ranking score" is oversimplifying. Real work reports per-assistant behavior, confidence-scored, methodology-versioned, and re-runnable.
